Todd, Do you know of any mini tillers that have blades that are pointed and can replace the cultivating blades? I currently rent a push aerator that requires weight to make holes to apply grass seed in thin areas. Pushing is becoming harder and that's why I looking for a mini tiller that changes blades. Thanks John

Answer
John - any of the four MANTIS garden cultivators that we carry can be adapted to an aerator function using the aerator attachment, which is sold separately: Mantis Aerator Attachment

how easy is this mantis machine to start

from
June 26, 2011
Answer
This mini-tiller is very easy to start. This model features an easy-to-pull recoil starter, which means you need less effort to pull the starter rope so the engine starts with much less effort.

I am looking for a smaller machine for my husband for weeding in the garden. He already has a big Husky for the prep work in the all and spring. I am interested in your opion on the matter. I see that the Mantis and Honda look like good contenders but am really not knowledgeable enough to even know the right questions to pick the correct machine. I live in an area where the soil in pretty clay like and heavy.

Answer
Karla - if you are looking for something compact and lightweight that you are going to use primarily for weeding rather than tilling the soil, then either the Mantis #7225 or the Mantis #7262 would be excellent choices. Just depends on whether you prefer a 2-cycle engine (#7225) or a 4-cycle engine (#7262) like your big Husky. The patented serpentine tines on the Mantis tillers make these a great choice when working in hard soil or clay. I think you will be happier with the Mantis than with the Honda model if you are working in heavy, clay-like soils.

What does it mean 50:1 for gas?
Joanne
from Texas
June 02, 2011
Answer
Joanne - all 2-cycle gas engines require the operator to "mix" the gas and oil together before filling the gas tank on the engine. Think about oil and vinegar dressing on a salad. For an engine that is a 50:1 mix, you would use 50 parts gas to 1 part oil for the proper fuel mix to run the engine at it's optimal level. Exact mix proportions will be on the bottle of 2-cycle engine oil - that is, how much oil goes into one gallon or one quart of gasoline.

Hello, We have a fairly large garden that, because of the rainy Spring we've had is growing weeds faster than I can dig them out.....same as last year. We are thinking of buying a tiller that I can use....not too big but one that will do the job. What do you suggest? Thank you.

Answer
Joan - if you are looking for something compact and lightweight that you are going to use primarily for weeding rather than tilling the soil, then either the Troy-Bilt TB146EC or the Mantis #7225 would be excellent choices. You will want something with front rotating tines, as these are more for cultivating and weeding than for tilling.

Does it require assembly? And if so, how much time is required to do so?

Answer
There will be minor assembly for shipping reasons, but very light. You would be putting together the handles.

Thanks,
