Q: Hi Bob. Can this be used to AERATE a lawn that already has grass? I am looking for something that would allow me to aerate a few times a year that works more quickly than my manual aerator.

Thanks

by Neil from New York on November 27, 2014

A: Neil - there is no aerator attachment available for the Troy-Bilt TBC57 cultivator. The tines that come with the unit are far too aggressive to use for aerating grass.
by Bob, Product Expert

Q: How long can you till per/charge?
by Frank from Michigan on March 09, 2014

A: Frank - the Troy-Bilt TBC57 cordless electric cultivator will run time up to 40 minutes on a full charge depending on soil conditions.
by Bob, Product Expert

Q: How long does it take to recharge the battery?
by Peggy Hedgpeth from Virginia on March 31, 2012

A: Peggy - the initial charge right out of the carton will take 4 to 6 hours to fully charge the battery. After that, it should take 2 to 2-1/2 hours to recharge the battery.

Troy Bilt Rechargeable.
Took it out today to prepare for planting some berry vines. It did super. I am a 65 year old woman and did not have any problem controlling it even though this is some of the hardest soil I have ever seen. It is almost impossible to dig with a shovel. I love my tiller.

Right For The Job
I have two plots in community gardens. I already owned an electric tiller, however there is no electricity at my gardens. I debated getting a gasoline powered tiler, but I did not want to fool with the gasoline and fumes. I saw that a battery powered tiller was available. I was a little worried that it may not be powerful enough. I also saw that the battery was good for at least half an hour.

I went ahead and bought the battery powered tiller and an extra battery in case one was not... more

Tiller - Not Ergo Friendly
I like the performance of the tiller...but... there is not enough adjustment on the tiller arms for short people. This puts my shoulders in very comfortable position and I cannot use the tiller for any length of time.

TD RESPONDS: You may want to contact the folks at Troy-bilt, toll free, at (800) 828-5500 to see if they have any tips or tricks for adapting their cultivator for a shorter reach.

Great For Older Users
Purchased for my 80+ year old mother, she could no longer pull start her small rototiller but wanting to keep her independence. This tiller fits the bill, just plug in battery and go. Only downside, she is under 5 feet and the handle is to tall. Also the battery is hard to get in and out of the charger.
Pros: Easy To Use, Quiet, Price, Light Weight
Cons: Not For Short Users, Battery Hard To Get In And Out Of Charger

My Tiller
It is such a treat to be able to easily start my tiller. No mixing of oil and gas. No difficulty starting. It's not as powerful as some tillers but it is not as frustrating as my last tiller. This will also make it easier to till between the rows in my garden.
Pros: Light Weight, Easy To Use, Reliable, At Least Its Easy To Start So It Is Dependable

Great Idea Failed To Fulfill My Exact Needs
I have a small Troy-Bilt tiller, but it would not go as deep as I needed. The Cultivator was more narrow and I hoped would get me the depth I needed. But the soil was hard enough that the front tines just walked in most places. Where the soil was moist and mostly sandy, it did what I needed but still not to the depth I wanted. I know what a cultivator is supposed to do, but I had hoped to use it to help me create a utility trench deep enough to reach the depth the utility workers requested. I... more

"I had the cultivator in short order. I did find that one of the batteries shipped with the cultivotor was faulty but after explaining what I felt was wrong between the battery and the charger, I was shipped a replacement immediately and it worked just as well as the first one I charged. I can use the cultivator in places where I only need to stir the soil and the idea that all I need is a fresh battery instead of fuel is a great idea. Customer Service was reasonable in that I did not have to ship the bad battery back and they believed that I knew what I was talking about where the charger was concerned."

Did Not Meet Expectations
Perhaps I had expectations set too high, as after hip surgery I needed a tiller that I would not have to wrestle with to get the job done.

This one is easy to use, but it does not "till" as I had expected. One has to go over the same ground several times to actually "till", all the while being careful not to till too deeply or the machine will simply stop.

The battery does not appear to last anywhere near the advertised time.
Pros: Easy To Use, Light Weight, Quiet
Cons: Insufficient Power

Product Expert
Joseph,
This unit is not a tiller. It's a cultivator, designed for stirring, not breaking soil. This battery-operated cultivator is not meant to be powerful enough to till into soil.

A front-tine tiller is capable of breaking loose soil and digging deeper. A rear-tine tiller is capable of breaking hard soil and providing more power and depth.

The battery time is likely shorter than expected because the unit's being overhauled to serve a purpose it's not designed for. If you have any further questions about the difference between a tiller and a cultivator, please reference our article Chop & Mix - The Difference Between a Tiller and a Cultivator, or feel free to give us a call at (888) 483-4649

Troy-bilt Cordless Electric Cultivator W/ Free 2nd Battery
The tiller works just fine. But, one of the batteries cuts off after a minute or two, then runs ok for another minute or so. I think the internal part(s) of the battery are faulty? The second battery works full time (20-30 minutes) then it's time to rest and recharge.

Great New Product
I am old and not in good health. I used to have a garden tiller that I would use, but it was difficult to run and sometimes difficult to start.

Now with the Lithium Ion cordless electric cultivator both my wife and I can cultivate much easier and quicker. We love our new Troy-Bilt cultivator.
Pros: Easy To Use, Light Weight, Quiet, Price

Bad Unit Delivered
New, out of the box unit was inoperative. Batteries charged up nicely, but this unit would not work. Possibly a bad switch? Very unsatisfactory for a brand new unit. Could not get any of the listed service shops to work on it. The last shop, after some investigation deemed it not cost effective to attempt a fix and suggested getting a refund.
Contact with Tillers Direct was fruitless. Was told to contact Troy Bilt for resolution of problem.
You sent me a pretty piece of junk. Am skeptical... more
